Introduction to Biostratigraphy

About the Course

To familiarize the participant with the biostratigraphy, its application as an operational tool, allowing participants to optimize its use at the exploration and oil production operations.

To provide basic but practical knowledge to professionals in biostratigraphy, including the major fossil groups used in geological operations, processing techniques of the samples, markers identification, use of biostratigraphic charts and their application in the geological interpretation of drilling sections

Biostratigraphic information is one of the tools routinely used in operations, so professionals at the drilling site need to understand the basics and methods, the type of information it can provide, its applications but also the limitations it has and the common pitfalls.

Course Objectives

This knowledge is important to correctly assess the stratigraphic level during drilling. It will help the professional in the interpretation of the paleontological associations that are encountered during the progress of the drilling.

It will create awareness on how to avoid falling into the most common mistakes that can occur while studying the samples and interpreting the meaning of the fossil assemblages found, to avoid erroneous conclusions about the level reached.

Course Content

During the development of the course it will be possible to delve into the various aspects of the biostratigraphic operational studies, always depending on the areas of interest of the participants.
