About the Course
Level 4 courses are aimed at wellsite supervisory and office-based personnel that are primarily involved with the operational decision-making process. The course covers well control theory (principles & procedures) and well control equipment with tons of work examples and questions and scheduled well control simulation sessions for surface and/or subsea installations at Driller and/or Supervisor level.
Course Objectives
It is designed to introduce to strategies to reduce the increasing tendency of well control incidents and techniques that can be applied to avoid the escalation of incidents to uncontrolled events and catastrophic consequences.
Course Content:
- The principles and procedures of rotary drilling well control for surface or combined (surface and subsea) BOP operations
- Rotary drilling well control equipment
- Simulator familiarization and IWCF practical assessment
o Primary Well Control Principles
o Normal and Abnormal Formation Pressures
o Causes of Kicks and Basic kick control sheet calculations
o Secondary Well Control
o System Pressure Losses, pressure loss due to Improper Hole Fill
o Equivalent Circulating Densities
o Leak‐off Tests / Equivalent Mud Weights & Maximum Mud Weights
o Rotary drilling well control equipment
o Simulator familiarization and learning
o Principles & procedures of rotary drilling well control for surface / subsea BOPs
Participants shall indicate which type of BOP certificate course (i.e. “Surface” or “Combined”) is needed by the participants. The training will be done for 4 days while the exams will be conducted on the 5th day.
The exam has three components –
- Principles and Procedures
- Equipment
- Simulator Assessment
Candidates that successfully pass all components will be issued the L4 IWCF Certificate that is valid for two years.

- Looking forward to training date to commence your training. However, if a need to change the dates of the training arises, you will be notified immediately. This may be due to unavailability of the instructors or due to unavoidable logistic challenges.
